5 Signs It Is Time to Replace Your AC or Furnace

September 29, 2026•2 min read

Nobody wants to buy a new air conditioner or furnace. But fixing the same system again and again costs money too.

How do you know which one is right for you? Here are five signs it may be time to replace your system instead of repairing it.

1. Your system is old

Many systems last around 10 to 15 years. Furnaces often last a bit longer. If yours is near or past that age, parts wear out faster and repairs get more common.

2. The repairs keep coming

One repair is normal. Two or three in a short time is a pattern. If you feel like you are calling for service every season, the system is telling you something.

3. Your power bills keep going up

Older systems lose strength over time. They run longer to do the same job. If your bills climb and your habits have not changed, an aging system may be the reason.

4. Some rooms are hot and some are cold

Uneven temperatures can come from ducts, size, or a tired system. Sometimes it is a simple fix. If it comes with age and noise, it may be more.

5. It is loud or it smells

Banging, grinding, and squealing are not normal. A burning smell or a musty smell needs a look too. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas company right away.

What to do next

Do not guess. Ask for a real look at the system. A good tech will tell you what is wrong, what a repair would cost, and what a new system would cost. Then you can decide with the real numbers in front of you.

A new system is a big choice. We offer financing through Hearth, so a big bill does not have to land all at once.
